LE GOUR NIAU or the Fages sawmill
For eternal delight, the late pleasures are not most insipid. While going down in Florac, I passed during years in front of the noisy Fages sawmill without doubting there lays a jewel below.
The waitress of the bar told me "we, youngsters went to the Gour Niau to swim and to have our first fancies". The access of the Tarn is simple while coming from Cocurès. It is necessary to turn left right just before the sawmill and to parked between the small allotment and the wood balls. The hardened road goes down and becomes a little footpath going down to the Tarn.
There exist an other possibility,at the left bank, coming from pont de la Pontèse of Bédouès follow the path for about 500 m. While passing don't forget to look at the little cuty shed at your left.
Le gour niau, is succeeded by 3 other bassins : le gour long, " les Laveuses " and " la Planchette "..
La Planchette (Small plank) in remembering a rudimentary wooden bridge which crossed the Tarn at this height of which is nothing left.
les Laveuses The Washerwomen because the women of Cocurès, provided with the traditional wood case went down to wash there. Recently still, some old ladies came to wash wool of their mattresses. Tiresome operation that do not want to make the younger generations any more. Nowadays the wool mattresses, treasures of yesterday, furnish the discharges.
Here, the Tarn offers to the bathers depth and width on several hundred meters. Even at the hottest hours of the month August, you will always find some intimacy. In summer, two small cascades separate the gour niau from the long gour.Brutally we passed in the schist, These permanent changes between limestone or schist, granite characteristic of the Lozere, always surprise.
The East-West orientation ensures sun late in the evening. The watertemperature near Cocurès is two to three degrees higher than those of Pont-de-Montvert.
Boxwood and wickers compose the not very dense vegetation at the right bank.
At the left bank, grow chestnutwood and ashes. A large dead chestnut overhangs the bathe, touching, intact but naked...
