Hibou grand duc Espèce protégée.

Rapace nocturne avec grosse tête, visage formant deux disques facieux, les yeux regardant en avant. Bec crochu et serres puissantes, à demi cachés; 65 à 70 cm.
Assez rare en France mais assez présent dans les falaises de notre département.

C'est le plus grand des nocturnes d'Europe, le double du hibou moyen-duc avec aigrettes proéminentes. Poitrine fauve largement rayée, grands yeux orangés. Dessus fauve, taché de brun foncé.

Il chasse principalement au début de la nuit et à l'aube des proies importantes: lapins, hérissons, rats, mustélidés et quelquefois des poissons. Capture jusqu'au lièvre et au Grand Tétras.
Il se repose dans les rochers crevassés, les arbres creux; solitaire; sexes semblables.

On peut entendre son chant à plus d'un km. à la tombée de la nuit en période d'accouplement au printemps et aussi en automne.
Voix: chant bref, mais grave oû-ho (la seconde syllabe est un peu tombante) parfois suivi d'un gloussement rauque.

Habitat: Parois rocheuses, versants montagneux et steppes ou causses découverts.
Niche à terre parmi les rochers et les buissons, sur une corniche abritée, dans les arbres creux, les vieux nids de rapaces.Il élève 2 ou 3 jeunes par an.

Eagle owl

Diurnal bird of prey, with long rounded wings, short tail and feathered legs and feet.

Flight slow and flapping. Stance upright. Nest in a hole, or in a old nest of other bird or even at the ground. Eyes large, orange.Song: a deep 'oo-hu'; other calls include a harsh 'kveck, kveck'.

Dense forests, rocky gorges. Hunting at down and dusk for mammals as large as roe deer and birds as large as Capercaillie.

Oehoe

Met zijn 62 a 72 cm de grootste Europese uil. Adult en juveniel geelbruin, van onderen lichter dan van boven, met fijne donkere streping en bandering. Bleekgele keel. Niet erg geprononceerde, bruine sluier; opvallende, oranje ogen met donkere pupillen. Lange rechtopstaande oorpluimen.

Donkerbruine, lange, brede vleugels, wat hem een nog forser voorkomen verschaft. Roep: galmend 'boehoew'.

Standvogel, blijft in zijn broedgebied, ook 's winters. Begin maart legt het wijfje dat iets groter is als het mannetje 2 tot 5 witte eieren. Er wordt 35 dagen gebroed alleen door het wijfje.

De oehoe vliegt alleen 's nachts, overdag verschuilt hij zich. Zijn prooi bestaat uit zoogdieren tot het formaat van een haas, maar ook uit vogels.
Bewoont grote bossen, beboste rotshellingen, zowel in laagland als in de bergen.
