Plumage noir bleu brillant, long bec arqué et pattes rouges.
Famille des corbeaux ,se plait bien sur les causses avec  petites grottes naturelles. Le seul corvidé aux des pattes et bec rouge, taille d'un pigeon.

Vol habile, léger et souvent acrobatique; plane avec les rémiges primaires largement écartées et retroussées. Sociable.
Se distingue facilement des choucas par l'absence totale de gris au plumage et du chocard par le bec plus long et rouge.
On peut l'observer  cet oiseau essentiellement insectivores pâturant par petits groupes sur les landes du causse.

Sa population a nettement diminué dans les 30 dernières années, problablement à cause des insecticides employés par les agriculteurs.

Voix: long cri vibrant, genre choucas: 'khya' ou 'tchior, pchiou'. Divers cris, genre goéland: 'kouok-ok-ok' etc;

lThe only all black bird of the region with red bill and legs, which distinguish it at once from both Alpine Chough and the black Corvus crows.

Lack of grey on nape separates it easily from smaller Jackdaw. Juvenile's bill tinged orange. Starling-like chattering subsong is rare; one common call-note is like a young Jackdaw's 'kyow', another is more gull-like than corvine, and a third 'k'chuf' has given the bird its English name.

Flight much more buoyant  than other black corvids, and performs acrobatics like Raven; both walks and hops. Flocks usually small.
